What’s ’’Awata Daitoro’’?
“Awata Daitoro” is a large lantern float from the Awata area that parades during the Awata Shrine Festival in Kyoto,Japan.The motifs of the Daitoro are the zodiac animals and a god associated with the rigion.
Of the ten large lanterns, about three are newly created each year by art university students in Kyoto.The frame is made from wood and wire and covered with Japanese paper.After drawing the pattern with wax, paint it.

When and where can we see ’’Awata Daitoro’’?
DAY1 Saturday , October11th , 2025
”Daitoro” (large lantern floats)are displayed along the approach to Awata shrine from about 5:30pm to 9p.m.
The shrine grounds are decorated with portable shrines and sword-like spear, and Iwami Kagura dance is offered.
a sword-like spear called ”kenboko”：A ritual implement seen since ancient times mainly in Kyoto that leads the mikoshi (portable shrine) at festivals.

Outside the festival period
Outside of the Awata Festival, the daitoro erns are always on display in the front (Sanjo Street) and courtyard show windows of the Tokyu Hotel Higashiyama Kyoto. The daitoro in the courtyard are lit from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, and are open to the public, even if you are not a hotel guest.
